Instead of common smooth nails, FORTIFIED requires ring-shank nails, installed in an enhanced pattern, to help keep the roof deck attached to your home in high winds. In fact, using ring-shank nails nearly doubles the strength of your roof against the forces of winds.
STRONGER EDGES
Roof damage often begins when wind gets underneath the roof edge and begins ripping it away from the home. To help protect this vulnerable area, FORTIFIED requires specific materials and installation methods, including a wider drip edge and a fully adhered starter strip, that when used together create a stronger system.
SEALED ROOF DECK
If wind rips off your roof covering such as shingles, metal panels or tiles it exposes the wood beneath and allows water to pass through the gaps of the exposed wood. Fortified requires roof decks to be sealed to prevent this type of water damage and gives you peace of mind.
$10,000 TAX CREDIT
NEW LOUISIANA LAW OFFERS $10,000 TAX CREDIT OUTSIDE OF THE GRANT PROGRAM FOR FORTIFIED ROOFING!!!
The Louisiana Department of Insurance (LDI) has a Louisiana Fortified Roof Tax Credit Program that provides a nonrefundable state individual income tax credit of up to $10,000 for homeowners who upgrade their primary residence to meet the IBHS Fortified roof standard. Qualified expenses must be for work done on or after July 1, 2025, and the credit is claimed by filing an application with the LDI's Taxpayer Access Point (LaTAP) in the year following the IBHS certification.
How the credit works
- Credit amount: The credit equals the full amount of qualified expenses, up to a maximum of $10,000 per residence.
- Eligibility: The credit applies to owner-occupied primary residences with a homestead exemption.
- Taxation: The grant award from the Louisiana Fortify Homes Program is subject to state income tax, but the tax credit offsets the cost of the roof fortification.
- Capped program: There is a cap of $10 million in credits per fiscal year, allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

How to apply
1. Fortify your roof: Work with a FORTIFIED-approved contractor to upgrade your roof to meet the FORTIFIED Roof standard.
2. Obtain a certificate: After the work is complete, your home will be issued a FORTIFIED Designation Certificate, and your contractor will provide you with Form R-90157-B, which lists the qualified expenses.
3. Apply for the credit: Submit your application, including the completed Form R-90157-B and any other required documents, electronically through the Louisiana Taxpayer Access Point (LaTAP) during the application period (January 1–June 30).
